A vacant city lot is being turned into a neighborhood garden. The neighbors want to fence in a triangular section of the lot and plant flowers there. The longest side of the triangular section is 8 feet shorter than twice the shortest side. The third side is 2 feet longer than the shortest side. The perimeter is 62 feet. How long is each side?

Answer:

longer side: shorter side x 2 -8 feet

3rd side: 2ft+short side....

perimiter:62ft.....

let shortest side =x

long side:(x) x 2-8ft

3rd side:2ft+x

62= 2x-8+2+x+x

62=4x-6

62+6=4x

68=4x

x=68/4

x(shortest side)=17

now longest side: 17x2-8=26ft

3rd side=2+17=19ft

shortest side=17ft
