A vase is placed on a table. Forces X and Y act on the vase. Force X is the force the table exerts on the vase and Y is the one which exerts force on the table. If the mass of the vase is 0.25kg, calculate value of force X and Y.

Answer:

Since the vase is not moving, we can say that the vase is in equilibrium. Hence the net sum of all forces acting on the vase is zero.

Therefore Force X + Force Y = 0

This implies that, X = ( -Y )

Here, the negative sign depicts the opposite direction.

We know that, the force exerted by an object towards Earth is depicted as mg. Hence the force exerted by Vase on the table is given as:

→ Y = mg

→ Y = 0.25 × 10 = 2.5 N

Therefore X is also 2.5 N but in the opposite direction.

Hence the value of Forces X and Y in magnitude is 2.5 N.

Given:

  • Forces acting on the vase = X , Y
  • The vase will not move
  • Mass of vase = 0.25 kg

To find:

  • X , Y

Solution:

Since , the vase is not moving so , the net force will be zero

X - Y = 0

X = Y

Here, if X is acting on a side force Y will be on the opposite side of X acting. And here given that Y is acting on the table that means the force Y is acting downward then , Force Y = m × g . Where g : acceleration due to gravity & m : mass

We know that

Acceleration due to gravity = 9.8 m/s²

Mass = 0.25 kg [ °.° Given ]

Substituting we have

→ Force Y = 0.25 × 10 = 2.5N

Since , Force Y is opposite of force X

→ Force X = 2.5 N

Hence, X = Y = 2.5N

Verification:

Since , the vase will not move the net force will be 0

That means

Force X = Force Y

→ 0.25 = 0.25

Hence, verified!
