Given :

Distance travelled by the vehicle = 8 m

Initial velocity of the vehicle = 40 m/s

Final velocity of the vehicle = 0 m/s

To Find :

Acceleration of vehicle

Solution :

As we are provided with initial Velocity, final velocity and distance covered we can use 3rd equation of motion.

so, using equation of motion .i.e.,

v² = u² + 2as

here, v denotes final velocity, u denotes Initial velocity, a denotes accerlation and s denotes distance covered.

now, let's substitute all the given values in the equation.

➠ 0² = 40² + (2)(a)(8)

➠ 0 = 1600 + 16a

➠ 0 - 1600 = 16a

➠ -1600 = 16a

➠ a = -1600/16

➠ a = -100

thus, the Acceleration of vehicle is -100 m/s²

Remember !

If the speed is decreasing with time then accerlation is negative. the negative accerlation is called retardation or deceleration.
