A vernier calipers has the main scale graduated in mm and total number of division on its vernier
Scale are 10. While measuring the length of a small pencil by it, the main scale reads 42 divisions
And seventh division of the vernier scale coincides with a main scale division.Calculate:
i) Least count of vernier caliper
ii) Main scale reading
iii) Vernier scale reading
iv) Length of pencil

Answer:

Count n, the number of divisions on the vernier scale of the caliper. 3. Note that a length equal to n-1 divisions of the main scale is divided into n equal parts. Thus the least count of the vernier, l.c. = s/n.

Answer

The least count of given vernier scale is:

L.C=

10

1−9

=0.1 mm=0.01 cm

If third division of vernier scale coincides with main scale division then the zero error is:

vernier division ahead of zero of main scale × least count

=3×0.01 cm

=0.03 cm

And it is ahead of main scale then error is positive

=+3×0.01 cm

=+0.03 cm
