A vernier has each main scale division
equal to 0.5 mm and 9 MSD are divided
Into 10 VSD. When measuring the
diameter of a sphere it shows 20 main
scale divisions and 12" VSD coincides
with a MSD. The diameter of the sphere
is (in mm
(a) 10.06
(b) 20.06
(c) 10.6
(d) 20.6

Answer: The diameter of the sphere is 10.6 mm

Explanation:

10 VSD = 9 MSD

1 VSD = 9/10 MSD

1 VSD = 0.9 MSD

Least count = 1 MSD - 1 VSD

Least count = 1 MSD - 0.9 MSD

Least count = 0.1 MSD

Least count = 0.1 × 0.5 mm = 0.05 mm

Vernier scale reading = n × Least count

n ⇒ n^{th} reading of vernier scale coinciding with main scale

Net reading = Main scale reading + Vernier scale reading

Net reading =  (20 × 0.5)mm  +  (12 × 0.05)  mm

Net reading =  10 mm + 0.6 mm

Net reading = 10.6 mm
