a vertical force does not work on a horizontally displaced object.This is because the displacement of the object in the direction of the force is zero. what is the meaning of the term?

Answer:

Vertical force here means that an upward or a downward force in an object. So when an object is displaced that is moved horizontally ( towards left or right ) a vertical force will not be observed as the object hasn't moved in the vertical direction ( where displacement is the total distance moved, which is a vector quantity that depends on direction) so the value of the force observed in the vertical direction will be zero.

F =  mass x acceleration

F = mass x Change in velocity / time

F = mass x Change in distance travelled / time^2

change in distance travelled = displacement

 Force depends on direction so vector and so is displacement .
