A vertical tree broke at a height of 6m from the ground and it's top fell to the ground at a distance of 8m from the foot of the tree. Find the distance to the top of the tree before it broke and a point on the ground where it touches after breaking.

Answer:

Let x be the length of broken part.

Total height of tree =x+6 m

Distance between foot of tree and the point where the tree touch the ground =8 m

In triangle BCD

BD2=BC2+CD2

Using Pythagoras theorem

(Hypotenuse)2=(Base)2+(Perpendicularside)2

x2=62+82=36+64=100

x=100=10 m

Total height of tree =x+6=10+6=16 m

In triangle ACD

AD2=AC2+CD2

Substitute the values

AD2=(16)2+82

AD2=256+64

AD2=320

AD=320=85 m

Hence, the distance between the top and the point where the tree touches the ground =85 m
