The fetal membranes are membranes associated with developing fetus. The two chorioamniotic membranes are the amnion and the chorion, which make up the amniotic sac that surrounds and protects the fetus.
There are four extraembroynic membrane layers
1)amnion 2) chorion 3)yolk sac and 4)allantois.
- During the second week of development, with the embryo implanted in the uterus, cells within the blastocyst start to organize into layers. Some grow to form the extra-embryonic membranes needed to support and protect the growing embryo: the amnion, the yolk sac, the allantois, and the chorion.

They are of two types
♢♢♢ The chorion: is the outer membrane. It is in contact with the uterine wall. It is attached to the margins of the placenta.
Histologically, it is composed of 4 layers:
☆cellular layer
☆dense reticulum
☆pseudo-basement membrane
☆ outer trophoblast.
♢♢♢The amnion: is a transparent greyish membrane which lines the chorion. It covers the foetal surface of the placenta and the umbilical cord. The amniotic sac contains the foetus swimming in the liquor amnii.
Histologically, it is composed of 5 layers:
☆cellular layer
☆basement membrane
☆compact layer
☆fibroblast layer
☆outer spongy layer adherent to the cellular layer of the chorion.
