A vessel at 1000K contains CO2 with a pressure of 0.5atm. some of the CO2 is converted into CO on the addition of graphite. if the total pressure at equilibrium is 0.8, what is the value of K?

Answer: 1.8

Explanation:

CO_2(g)+C(s)\rightleftharpoons 2CO

initially        0.5    0             0

at eq'm     0.5-x    0           2x

As solids do not contribute to pressure.

Given total pressure= 0.5-x+2x=0.8

x=0.3

Thus p_{CO_2}=0.5-0.3=0.2atm

p_{CO}=2\times 0.3=0.6atm

So eq'm constant will be:

K_p=\frac{(p_{CO})^2}{p_{CO_2}}

K_p=\frac{(0.6)^2}{0.2}

K_p=1.8
