Given

A vessel contains milk and water in the ratio of 4:3. If 14 litres of the mixture is drawn and filled with water, the ratio changes to 3:4. How much  milk was there in the vessel initially?

ANSWER

Let milk m = 4 x and water = w = 3 x

So given  m/w = ¾

Now 4 x / 3 x + 14 = ¾

16 x = 9 x + 42

16 x – 9 x = 42

7 x = 42

x = 42/7

x = 6

Now milk = 4 x = 4 x 6 = 24  litres
