Given : A vessel contains mixture acetone and water mixed in certain ratio. When 25 percent of the mixture is taken out and replaced with same quantity of water, then the ratio of acetone to water becomes 5:7 .

To Find : the ratio of acetone to water, initially in the mixture.

Solution:

Let say initially Acetone  4A

and Water  is 4W

Ratio is 4A : 4W = A : W

=> Mixture = 4A + 4Q

25 percent of the mixture is taken out

=> Water taken out = A   and Acetone Taken out  = W

Water added = A + W

Acetone = 4A - A = 3A

Water  =   4W - W  + A + W   =  4W  + A

ratio of acetone to water becomes 5:7 .

=> 3A  / (4W + A)  =  5/7

=> 21A = 20W + 5A

=> 16A = 20W

=>  4A : 5W

=> A /W = 5/4

=> A : W  = 5 : 4

ratio of acetone to water, initially in the mixture.  = 5 : 4
