A vessel contains water upto a height of 20 cm and above it an oil upto another 20 cm. The refractive indices of the water and the oil are 1.33 and 1.30 respectively. Find the apparent depth of the vessel when viewed from above.

Given :

refractive indices of the water and the oil are 1.33 and 1.30

height of water =20 cm

height of oil= 20 cm

Shift due to water Δtw=1 - (1/μ)d

=[ 1- (1/1.33)]x20

=1/4 x 20

=5cm

shift due to oil :

1 - (1/μ)d

=[ 1- (1/1.30)]x20

=4.6cm

total shift = 5+4.6=9.6cm

apparent depth = 40- 9.6

= 30.4cm between the surface
