A vessel has 6 g of oxygen at a pressure P and
temperature 400 K. A small hole is made in it so
that O, leaks out. How much 0, leaks out if the
pressure is P/2 and temperature 300 K?

Answer:

Here P 1 = P

T 1 = 400 K

T 2 = 300 K

P 2 =P / 2

V is constant.

By ideal gas equation, P 1 x V = n1 x R x T 1

Again by ideal gas equation, P 2 x V = n2 x R x T 2

=

=

= 1.5

Mass m 1 = 6 g.

Molar mass of oxygen gas = 32 g/ mol

Now

n 1 = =

Similarly

n 2 = =

But = 1.5

= 1.5

m 2 = 4 g

Here m 2 = mass of oxygen left.

Thus mass of oxygen leaked out = m 1 - m 2

= 6 - 4 = 2 g

Thus 2 g of oxygen gas leaked out.
