A violin and a flute have distinct sound because of timbre.
A timbre is define by which, a overtune is produced. Every instrument produces a different set of overtimes. Some produces odd overtune with no even overtune while some don't produce high overtune.
However, amplitude of the sound waves is also responsible for distinct sound.
