I always wanted to visit a foreign country. So when my parents told me that we were going to Singapore during the Christmas vacation, I was on cloud nine.
I was counting days and finally the day to leave for Singapore arrived. When we landed at the Changi airport, I was awestruck looking at the huge airport. My parents told me about the no littering policies in Singapore. The most surprising thing that my father told me was that carrying or eating chewing gum was a punishable offence in Singapore. To be honest, I was a little scared to set my foot outside the airport.Anyway if we wanted to visit the tourist attractions at the airport, I would have to step outside. So finally we came out. The first thing i noticed was it was so hot. My brother started complaining and then I told him that since Singapore is closer to the equator, it was bound to be hot. We hopped into the airport taxi and went to the hotel where we were staying.
I was amazed by the cleanliness and order in Singapore. Not even a speck of dust or piece of paper was to be found anywhere. All the vehicles were following the traffic rules.
I was also taken aback when the driver mentioned that he could speak Tamil and that Tamil was one of the offical languages of Singapore, apart from Malay, Chinese and English.
The  next day we took a city tour and the guide told us that this island city was almost doubled in size from its original size by land filling. The skyscrapers we saw were huge.
Apart from the city tour, we also visited the Night Safari, Jurong bird park etc. Those visits are different stories altogether. When we were returning, I took back with me many memories and lessons.

A visit to any foreign country is always filled with surprises. The sights and sounds, the people and their culture, the languages spoken and the food that is eaten is quite or altogether different from that which we see, hear and eat every day. As we move further and further away from our country, the differences keep widening. For instance, Bangladesh and Nepal have a lot in common with India, but as we move towards the African countries on the west and other Asian countries on the east the differences become more noticeable. It is as if the Creator has laid out a garden which has assorted plants, trees, flowers, fruits, animals, birds and so on spread out in a wonderful mosaic that catches the eye at every step.
I had the good fortune of visiting two countries in east Africa, Zambia and Kenya. While most people, who have not visited these places, expect them to be climatically very hot right through the year, I was privileged to experience the eternal spring of both these nations. It was also wonderful to take in the sights and sounds of these unique places, like the waterfalls and the widespread greenery. The people were seen to be wearing very colourful clothing and, generally, appeared to be quite friendly. The reserve forests or game reserves cover wide areas and the trips are full of fun and enjoyment.
