We were greatly delighted, when one day the social studies teacher told us that she was going to arrange a visit to a tea estate close to nuwara eliya.we had been studying about the main products of srilanaka and many of us had never been to a tea estate or a tea-factory.
The happy day dawned. By evening we found ourselves in nuwara eliya.we decided to visit the factory the following day. Next day we were driven to the estate and we saw with delight the tea clad hills. A winding estate road took us to the factory.
The happy day dawned. By evening we found ourselves in nuwara eliya.we decided to visit the factory the following day. Next day we were driven to the estate and we saw with delight the tea clad hills. a winding estate road took us to the factory. we had seen it in the distance – a tiny toy like silver box. now we saw it was a big silver colored building. The fragrance of tea was everywhere. The factory manager himself greeted us and agreed to show us around. He also said he would tell us how tea was manufactured.
We were first taken to the place whether fresh tea leaves were being collected. Even as we watched, we saw the gaily dressed estate coolies coming with baskets, loaded with the tea flush. Each woman’s pick was weighed. The tea leaves were collected in one place. We ware then taken to a room where the tea leaves were spread out on racks to wither. Then we saw the rolling machines which broke the leaves into pieces. Then they were passed through a mesh sieve. After that they were taken to a cool damp room and spread out on racks. This is where the leaves fermented. The green leaves turned a copper cooler. Next we saw the copper leaves put into a drying machine. Then they were passed through sieves and graded. after that they were packed into tea chests. We saw the chests being loaded into lorries to be sent to Colombo for distribution and export. After, learning about the production of tea – srilanka’s principal export we left the factory with a gift of a packet of tea each. It was an enjoyable and educational excursion.
