On Wednesday, when the national capital reported over 5500 fresh Covid-19 cases at a positivity rate of 6.10%, many weekly markets across the city were packed to capacity, with most shoppers clearly flouting social distancing norms.
I visited two such markets and saw poor compliance of social distancing protocols with shoppers jostling with each other for space.
At the weekly Wednesday market in Govindpuri, mask discipline was poor with little to no social distancing, despite public address systems relaying announcements about standard operating procedures.
I was at the market along with my siblings and mother, and the market was crowded as usual despite the government confirming that Delhi will witnessing the Third wave of the infection.
The market is usually crowded on Wednesday. If you go by the crowds, you’d think that the pandemic is over. While there were announcements reminding people to maintain physical distancing, shoppers are not mindful of the rules.

It was the complete Lockdown period from the previous year, and we were all suffering from the different consequences of the nationwide complete lockdown. At that time, going outside without any emergency reason was completely prohibited. Our family also followed the rules of the lockdown, issued by the government, we stayed at home for most of the time and my father went out once in a week to buy the market for buying home essentials.
Things were going good, but oneday my father suddenly caught cold. Without wasting any time we went to the doctor, and the doctor suggested for a covid-19 testing. After testing, the laboratory doctor said the test reports will arrive after two days, and untill the reports come my father should do self-isolation for precautionary measures. We went back home and followed the same for next two days.
Out of those two days, one day was the day of weekly marketing of home essentials. As my father was home isolated, I took the responsibility for going to the market. And, for the first time I visited the market in the lockdown period. The later experiences surprised me a little bit.
There were police patroling almost everywhere in order to avoid any crowding in the market area. The sanitizer was given to each and everyone at the entrance of the market and mask is a must for getting entrance in the market. The opening of shops in the market was 50% in amount. Instead of a time consuming process social distancing was followed in everywhere. By following every safety protocols I purchased all the necessary things from the market and went back home.
This experience of going to market in peak lockdown period, is surely memorable to me.
