A warm Sunday morning was just hotter and hotter. It was a book market. The market which though, was
running on a footpath, seemed really exclusive to many. The unbeatable sweat made the faces glitter. A
running traffic lane and shadows of the buildings across the road seldom provided a helping breeze to the
onlooker.
It was a narrow footpath fenced by a grill on one side and shops on the other. It was a long path which
required good stamina to cover it from one end to the other. The footpath contained all the treasure the
hunters had come for. The already narrow path was filled with four rows of books on either end to make it
even slim. The push from behind was the driving force to keep the people moving.
It seems there is something for everyone who comes to this market that kicks off by 11o’clock in the
morning. The trick that works in such markets, however, is to show no interest in the book at all and you can
then get it at half the price. The prices of religious books are reduced further as there are hardly any buyers
for such books. Books with pictures are the ones that do really well in such markets.
People keep pushing each other, while their eyes are fixed on their favourite books. Delicious ‘kacbodis’ are
a favourite among those who visit this market, through insects are the first ones to taste them. The old
women who is sitting near the signal is selling vegetables and also waiting for buyers to buy some of her
calenders.
75years on her grey hair do not take away her active enthusiasm at grabbing people’s attention by shouting at
the top of her voice.
The wealthy buyers are constantly conscious of their heavy wallets and therefore feel threatened of the
pickpockets in the heavily crowded areas. In markets such as these, one indeed sees the true colours of India.
