A washing machine is filling up with water at a constant rate. The rate is Three-fourths of a gallon in StartFraction 1 over 5 EndFraction of a minute. Don calculated the unit rate to be StartFraction 3 over 20 EndFraction of a gallon per minute. What did he do wrong?

To Find : What did he do wrong?

He added 3/4 to 1/5 instead of multiplying 3/4 by 1/5.

He divided 3/5 by 1/5 instead of multiplying 3/4 by 1/5.

He added 3/4 to 1/5 instead of dividing 3/4 by 1/5.

He multiplied 3/4 by 1/5 instead of dividing 3/4 by 1/5.

Solution:

3/4  gallon  filled in  1/5  minute  

To find The Rate of Filling up water  =  Water Filled / Time Taken

=  (3/4 ) / ( 1/5)

= 3 * 5 / 4

= 15/4  galloon per minute

3/4 x 1/5

= 3/20

Don multiplied  time with water filled   instead of dividing to find  rate of filling Water

He multiplied 3/4 by 1/5 instead of dividing 3/4 by 1/5.
