A water pump, rated 400W, has an efficiency of 75%. If it is employed to raise water through a height of 40m, find the volume of water drawn in 10min.

Text Solution

Solution :

OutputPower=η×Inputpower

=0.75×400=300W

Now,

P=dWdt=d(mgh)dt

dmdt=Pgh=30010×40=34kg=34×60kgmin−1=45kgmin−1

Hence, water drawn in 10min=45×10=450kgmin−1

Since density of water is 1000kgm−3, therefore, from

V=mρ=4501000=0.45m3
