Given: A water sample contains 204 mg of CaSO4 per liter.

To find: Hardness in terms of CaCO3 equivalent

Solution: Let the mass of CaSO4 be m.

Therefore, m = 204 mg/L

Molar mass of CaSO4(M1)

= Atomic mass of Ca + Atomic mass of sulphur+ 4 × atomic mass of oxygen

= 40 + 32 + 4×16

=136 g/ mol

Molat mass of CaCO3(M2)

= Atomic mass of Ca + Atomic mass of carbon+ 3 × atomic mass of oxygen

= 40 + 12 + 3× 16

= 100 g/mol

Hardness in terms of CaCO3 equivalent

= (given mass of CaSO4/ Molar mass of CaSO4) × Molar mass of CaCO3

= (m/M1) × M2

Putting values:

Hardness

= (204/136) × 100

= 1.5 × 100

= 150 mg/L

Therefore, hardness of water in terms of CaCO3 equivalent is 150 mg/L.
