A water tank can is 1/5 full. After drawing off 16 litres it is just 1/6 full. What is the capacity of the water tank? ​

Solution -

Suppose that the capacity of the water tank is x litres .

Initially, it is ⅕ th full .

So, amount of water present initially is x/5 litres .

Now, 16 litres of water are drawn from the tank .

After that , the tank is only ⅙ th full .

Final amount of water present of the tank is x/6 litres .

From the observations we deduced above , we can form a linear equation in terms of x .

=> x/5 - 16 = x/6

=> x/5 - x/6 = 16

=> [ 6x - 5x ]/30 = 16

=> x/30 = 6

=> x = 180 litres ..

Thus , the capacity of the water tank is 180 litres .

This is the required answer .
