Basic characteristics of a monocot  are:

1. It shows parallel venation and has narrow, long leaf.

2. Fibrous root system is seen

3. The number of cotyleden-1

Basic characteristics of a dicot

1. It shows reticulate venation and has a broad leaf

2. Tap root system is seen.
