A well with 10 m inside diameter is dug 14 m deep. Earth taken out of it is spread all around to a width of 5 m to form an embankment. Find its hight?

Diameter of the well = 10m

Radius of the well

 = \frac{d}{2} \\ \\

= \frac{10}{2} \\ \\

= 5m

Depth of the well = 14m

Volume of earth dug out

 = \pi{r}^{2} h \\

 = \pi \times {5}^{2} \times {14m}^{3} \\

= 350\pi {m}^{3}

Let the height of embankment be H m.

Now volume of embankment = 350\pi {m}^{3}

Now,

π (r + 5)^2 H – π r^2H = 350 π

H [ (5 + 5)^2 – 5^2 ] = 350

H (100 – 25)  = 350

H =  \frac{350}{75} \\

 = \frac{14}{3} \\

 = 4.66

Hence,

The height of the embankment is 4.66 m.
