Why did the French thought colonies were necessary? What did they do fir that? Explain .

There were two reasons:
1) Raw material: French thought it was necessary to have colonies for raw material.
2) Civilising mission: They also thought it was duty of advanced Europeans to give benefits of civilisation to these backward classes.
