Answer:

5-1.8+1.2

= 4.4 displacement

5+1.8+1.2

= 8 total distance

Distance

Whale first swims due east for distance of 5 km.

It turns around in west for 1.8 km.

It heads to east for 1.2 km.

Distance: Distance is the total movement of an object without any regard to direction.  It is scalar quantity.

Displacement: Displacement is defined as the change in position of an object. It is vector quantity.

Distance = 5+1.8+1.2=8 \ km

Displacement =5-1.8+1.2=4.4 \ km

Note: The scenario is well explained through a picture attached, all way should be on same line ideally, but to understand small distance between lines are given.
