(a) What is an ecosystem? List its two main components. We do not clean natural ponds or lakes but an aquarium needs to be cleaned regularly. Why is it so? Explain. (b) “Energy flow in food chains is always unidirectional.” Justify this statement.
Answers
(a)Ecosystem is the structural and functional unit of biosphere comprising of living organisms and their nonliving environment that interact by means of food chains and chemical cycles. The components of ecosystem are biotic and abiotic factors.
Pond is a natural ecosystem so it is not needed to clean regularly because naturally decomposers are more and they clean it. Where as aquarium is an artificial ecosystem and there are less decomposers hence it must be cleaned regularly
(b)It is unidirectional because the energy that is captured by herbivores from sun cannot be revert back also the 10 percent energy that is taken by carnivores cannot be given back.
