(a) What is meant by a solution ? Give two examples of solutions.

(a) What is meant by a solution ? Give two examples of solutions. What Is a Solution?

A solution is a type of homogeneous mixture that is made up of two or more substances. A homogeneous mixture is a type of mixture with a uniform composition. This means that the substances cannot be distinguished easily from one another.

Some examples of solutions are salt water, rubbing alcohol, and sugar dissolved in water. When you look closely, upon mixing salt with water, you can't see the salt particles anymore, making this a homogeneous mixture.

(b) What is a suspension ? Give two examples of suspensions.

(b) What is a suspension ? Give two examples of suspensions. What is a Suspension?

A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture of two or more substances. In it, the particles are suspended throughout the solution in bulk and can be easily seen by naked eyes. Here, the particles of the solute do not dissolve in the solution and are rather suspended. Particles of the suspension are large enough to scatter the rays of light and the path of ray is visible through it.

Some of the common examples of include:

Mixture of chalk and water

Muddy water

Mixture of flour and water

Mixture of dust particles and air

Fog

Milk of magnesia, etc.

(c) What is a colloid ? Give two examples of colloids (or colloidal solutions)

(c) What is a colloid ? Give two examples of colloids (or colloidal solutions)What are Colloids or Colloidal Solution?

Colloidal solutions, or colloidal suspensions, are nothing but a mixture in which the substances are regularly suspended in a fluid. A colloid is a very tiny and small material that is spread out uniformly all through another substance.

Sugar & Salt in Water makes a Solution

Explanation:

a.) A particle being dissolved in a substance is termed as Solute and the one in which is dissolved is called Solvent in a Mixture.

When two or more substances gets mixed in order to form, what we called as Homogeneous Mixture (Special Solution).

Example -

1.) Sugar in Water

2.) Salt with Water

whereas

b.) When the solute particles does not gets dissolved and finally settle down at bottom and making both solvent and solute differentiated, then solution is termed as Suspension

example-

1.) Clay in Water

2.) Dust in Air

c.) When two particles gets evenly dispersed into each other then Colloids are formed.

  • The dispersed substance is called Dispersed phase in the mixture and the continuous phase is the one wherein it gets dispersed.

example-

1.) Muddy Water

2.) Colored Glass
