The SI unit for measurement of potential different is volt (symbol V). The potential difference between two points is said to be 1 volt if work done in transferring 1 coulomb of charge from one point to the other point is 1 joule. One Volt is equivalent to one Joule per Coulomb.

Volt is a term used in honour of Alessandro Volta who was an Italian physicist, chemist, and pioneer of electricity and power. He is the inventor of the electric battery and the discoverer of methane.
