Reactivity series

a) Reactivity series and its importance in predicting the relative activities of various metals.

  • The series like arrangement of metals based upon their reacting ability is called reactivity series.
  • It is important to identify elements as most reactive and least reactive as in it the metals are arranged based on the decreasing order of reactivity.

b) Process to obtain metals fro oxides:

Extraction of metals in the middle of the activity series

  • The different process used for extracting metals of the middle of activity series are:
  1. Roasting
  2. Calcination
  3. Oxidation

Steps involved in the extraction of zinc:

i)Roasting:

2ZnS+3O_2\rightarrow 2ZnO+2SO_2

ii) Calcination:

ZnCO_3\rightarrow ZnO+CO_2

iii) Oxidation:

ZnO+C\rightarrow Zn+CO

Extraction of metals in the top of the activity series

  • The metals present at the top of activity series are extracted through a process called as electrolytic reduction.
  • For example, when metal such as sodium is electrolysed with molten chlorides, the pure metal is deposited at cathode, whereas the chlorine is liberated at the anode.
  • The reaction involved is as follows:

At cathode : Na^++e^-\rightarrow Na

At anode : 2Cl^-\rightarrow Cl_2+2e^-

Answer:

1 ) .Reactivity series :

It is series of decreasing order of metals' reactivity. Hydrogen is place in middle of series. Above hydrogen metals are more reactive in nature below are less. Metal which is more reactive it displaces a less reactive metal from its salt solution.

2 ) .

In order to obtaining a metal from its  oxides for metals in the middle of the reactivity series then metals towards oxides of such metals can be reduced with coke (carbon) which acts as a reducing agent.

For instance :

2 Fe₂O₃ + 3 C  ⇒ 4 Fe + 3 CO₂.

In order to obtaining a metal from its  oxides for metals in the high of the reactivity series their oxides are reduced to metals by the process of electrolysis

For instance :

Electrolysis of sodium chloride :

Na⁺ + e⁻  ⇒ Na   [ At cathode ]

2 Cl⁻ ⇒ Cl₂ + 2 e⁻   [ At anode ]
