Heya
(a) Group one elements have their electronic configuration as ns¹
Group two elements have their electronic configuration as ns².
(b) The elements in the same group are chemically similar as they have similar valance electronic configuration.
The first element of a period, let us say 3rd period, is the one which has one electron in the third shell.
The first element of a period 'n' will be the one which has valance electronic configuration has ns¹
Hope it helps!
