A wheel of radius 20 cm has forces applied to it as shown in the figure. The torque
p
forces 4 N at A, 8 N at B, 6 N at C, 9 N at D at angles indicated is:
(a) 5.4 N-m anticlockwise
(c) 2.0 Nm clockwise
(b) 1.80 N-m clockwise
(d) 5.4 N-m clockwise

The torque in the direction is  1.8 N-m c.

Explanation:

Force 8 N can also be resolved into two components.

  • Tangential direction
  • Radial directions

τnet = [ 9+8 sin(30°) − 4] [0.2) N-m clockwise

The torque produced by the forces 9 N at D is

τ = 9 N x sin 90° x  0.2 = 1.8 N-m (by using the equation (1) and substituting corresponding values from the figure)

In the clockwise direction.

So Total torque is

τ = 0.8−0.8−1.8=−1.8

= 1.8 N-m c

Thus the torque in the direction is 1.8 N-m c.
