SOLUTION

GIVEN

A while back, either James borrowed $12 from his friend Rita or she borrowed $12 from him, but he can’t quite remember which. Either way, he is planning to pay her back or ask that she pay him back this afternoon.

He has $42.80 in his wallet,

TO DETERMINE

The equation represents the amount of money he may have after he sees Rita

EVALUATION

Let x be the money James sees after Rita

Case : 1

If James borrowed $12 from his friend Rita then James have to pay it

In this case James have = x - 12

So in this case the equation is

x - 12 = 42.80

Case : 2

If Rita borrowed $12 from James then James will receive from Rita

In this case James have = x + 12

x + 12 = 42.80

Thus both equations can be rewritten as

x - 42.80 = 12

x - 42.80 = - 12

Combining both we can write

 \sf{ |x - 42.80|  = 12}
