A white shirt has a yellow stain of curry. When soap is rubbed on this shirt during washing, the yellow stain turns reddish-brown. On rinsing the shirt with plenty of water, the reddish-brown stain turns yellow again.

(a) Turmeric is the natural indicator present in curry stain. When the soup is applied to the yellow stain, reddish-brown colour is formed. This is because of the reason that the soup is a base. When the water is added to the reddish-brown, the yellow colour is formed again.

(b) Soap is basic in nature.

Explanation:

When soap is rubbed on the yellow stain, the natural indicator (turmeric) present in the curry produces reddish brown colour as the soap is basic in nature. When the cloth is rinsed with water once again, it returns to yellow color because of the soap’s basic nature.
