a)The poet thinks he had lost his childhood because at the age of eleven he realised that hell and heaven were not places that could be found in Geography and since then he had never been the same person.

b)This line refers to the fact that the family was very poor. However, the situation was ironic because they were very honest and could never retort to corrupt means for earning money.

c)The narrator and his wife wanted to 'duplicate' the round-the-world voyage made 200 years ago by Captain James Cook. They has been making formidable for the last 16 years. First of all they got a boat especially designed and professionally built for this purpose.

d)Mrs. Dorling was cautious while opening the door as she did not want the narrator to come inside her house. Inside the home, her mother's belongings such as silver, cutlery, crockery, antique plates, Hanukkah, etc. were present; narrator's mother had given these things to her to keep them safe.

e)The sparrows were utterly despaired when the author's grandmother died. They expressed their sorrow by sitting scattered on the floor, with no chirping. They did not even take notice of the bread crumbs, which the author's mother scattered for them.
