Ethanol is a very good solvent for organic matter. So, if the syrups are made from ethanol, it enters into the body and dissolves in itself the pathogenic cells, hence giving relief.
In making of ethane (ethene actually) from ethanol, H2SO4 acts as a dehumidifier and absorbs water formed.

1) It is used for making such things because it is an active ingredient for their manufactures
2). Because conc. H2So4 acts as a dehydration agent and dehydrates ethanol to ethene and when a molecule of H2 is added to it it becomes ethane
