b) Both of them were at Gerrard's Cottage at that time.

c) The speaker's tone was in a surprising manner but it doesn't shows that he is afraid of the Intruder.

d) it tells us that the speaker is a very calm person who faces the intruder boldly and tricked him successfully. This also shows that the speaker is a very brave man who acts smartly.
