(a) the two boys were out in the deserted square to sell the pile of unsold         newspapers to the passengers coming from the last bus from Padua.
(b) the narrator saw the two boys in the public square where they were shinning shoes.
(c) Luigi, the cautious driver stopped the narrator from buying the wild strawberries from the two boys because of their shabby appearance, unkempt hair and their poor dressing sense of manner.
