ANSWER:

The present age of B is 14.

GIVEN:

A will be twice as old as B was 5 year ago and A is now 9 year older than B.

TO FIND:

The present age of B.

EXPLANATION:

Let age of A be x and age of B be y.

A will be twice as old as B was 5 year ago

x - 5 = 2 (y - 5)

x = 2y - 10 + 5

x = 2y - 5

Also A is now 9 year older than B.

x = y + 9

Equate both the x values

y + 9 = 2y - 5

- y = -14

y = 14

The present age of B is 14.

THE PRESENT AGE OF A:

Substitute y = 14 in x = y + 9

x = 14 + 9

x = 23

The present age of A is 23.

VERIFICATION:

Substitute y = 14 and x = 23 in x - 5 = 2 (y - 5)

23 - 5 = 2(14 - 5)

18 = 2(9)

18 = 18

HENCE VERIFIED.
