A wire of resistance 5 Ω is divided into five equal parts. These parts are
connected in parallel. Find the new resistance.

On dividing, l -> l/5 (for each wire)

Resistance of each wire = 5/5 = 1 ohm

On connecting in parallel,

1/R = 1/1 + 1/1 + 1/1 + 1/1 + 1/1 = 5

R = 1/5 = 0.2 ohm

the total resistance = 1/5 + 1/5 + 1/5 + 1/5 + 1/5 + 1/5 / 5 = 25/5 = 5 [ L.C.M = 5 ]

                                           (OR)

the total resistance connected in parallel series = n/R

                                                                                = 5/25

                                                                                = 1/5

∴ R = 5 Ω
