Step-by-step explanation:

Son's present age is 10 (denoted by "x")

Mother's present age is: 40 (denoted by "4x"

In 20-years' time, the Son's age will be x + 20

and the Mother's age will 4x + 20 which equals twice x + 20

Therefore, 2(x + 20) = 4x + 20

2x + 40 = 4x + 20

2x - 4x = 20 - 40

-2x = -20

x = 10 (Son's present age)

4x = 40 (Mother's present age)

Son's age in 20-years' time = 30

Mother: 40 + 20 = 60 = twice Son's age.
