Fantastic Fairy Tale: The Honest Woodcutter

In a village next to a forest there lived two woodcutters. They were neighbors staying next to each other.

Jack, the first woodcutter was a very energetic and honest one. Tim, the other woodcutter was a lazy and a mean person. Both earned their living by cutting woods in the near by forest.

One day, as usual in the morning, Jack started his work.

“Ah! He has started early in the morning. Boring! I will start a bit later,” Tim said to himself.

Tim led a miserable life as he was not ready to work hard. Whereas, Jack went to the forest and looked out for woods.

“Here I don’t find any good wood, let me go to the river side where I will get wood,” said Jack.

He walked towards the river. There he found a big tree. Jack climbed up the tree and started to chop the wood.

As he was chopping the ax slipped from his hand and fell into the river.

“Oh no! What have i done? That was my only property which earned money. Without that what will I do,” Jack said while crying.

Suddenly a beautiful Fairy with glittering wings appeared and asked him.

“Why are you crying?”

“I dropped my ax in the river, please help me!”

“Don’t worry, I will get you the ax,” said the Fairy.

The fairy took an ax from the river. It glittered as it was made of gold.

Jack was stunned to see such a shining beautiful ax. But Jack said without any hesitation.

“No fairy, this is not mine.”

The fairy took another ax from the river. It was made of silver.

“Is this your ax?” asked the fairy

“Not, this is not mine,” said Jack

The fairy pulled an ax made of iron.

“Is this yours?” asked the Fairy.

Jack’s face showed a sign of joy.

“Yes! This ax is mine,” said Jack jumping with joy.

“I am very much pleased with your honesty, take all the three axes. This is a reward for your honesty,” said the Fairy

Jack happily went home with the three axes. When he crossed Tim’s house. Tim saw the axes and was stunned.

“He went with the iron ax in the morning but now he is returning back with a golden and silver ax. Something has happened. Let me follow him and find out”, said Tim.

Tim without the knowledge of Jack, followed him. Jack reached the house and called his wife.

She came there and saw the axes. She was surprised.

“How come you got this golden and silver ax?” she asked.

Jack explained how the Fairy appeared and gave him the axes. They planned to sell the golden ax in the market.

Tim who was hearing all this from outside decided to follow Jack the next day.

Next day, Jack sold the golden ax and started a new happy life. Even though he has become rich, Jack went to work as usual.

“Jack? Where are you going in this early hour?” asked Tim.

“As usual, to work Tim,” Jack replied and continues his walk to the forest.

“He is a fool. Having become so rich still he goes to work instead of enjoying his life,” Tim said to himself. Oh let me follow him to find out where he cut his woods.”

Tim followed Jack to the forest. Jack went near the river and started his work.

“Ah, this is the river where his ax slipped. Let me wait till he leaves this place,” said Tim hiding behind a tree.

Tim waited till Jack left. He immediately went to the river and deliberately dropped his ax into the river.

“Oh someone please help me to get my ax back from the river,” said Tim.

The beautiful fairy appeared again.

She asked Tim why is he crying.

Tim told her that his ax fell into the river and asked her for help. The Fairy knew he was trying to play with him and decided to teach him a lesson.

She took out Tim’s iron ax first.

“Is this your ax Tim?” asked Fairy

“Why is she showing the iron ax instead of the gold one,” Tim said to himself.

No! This is not mine,” said Tim.

The Fairy then took out the silver ax and showed it to him.

“Is this your ax?” asked Fairy

“No. Not this one,” Tim replied.

She took out the golden ax.

“What about this one. Is this yours?”, asked Fairy

“Yes! this one is mine!”, replied Tim.

Fairy was furious by this act of Tim. She knew Tim lied to her questions.

“How dare you tell lies to me, you should be punished for being dishonest and a liar.”,

She took all three axes and disappeared.

“My ax! Fairy please forgive me for telling lies, please give back my iron ax. Oh God! What will i do now?” cried Tim.

All his shouting went useless. Tim returned home without the ax which was his only property. But he had learnt his lesson.
