A wooden platform of 5m is suspended from the roof of the house by ropes attached to its end. A carpenter weighing 800N stands 1.5m from the left end of the platform. If the weight of the platform is 150N,calculate the tension of each of the ropes

Answer:

suppose tension in left rope id T1 and in right rope is T2

So, T1+T2=950 N...(i)

Also, Net torque should be zero.

So, about centre of mass of wooden platform (at 2.5m),

Net torque = T1*2.5-W*1-T2*2.5=0

So, 2.5(T1-T2)=W=800

T1-T2= 320N...(ii)

Adding (i) and (ii)

T1=635N

T2=315N
