A wooden pole was broken by wind .before it broke the total height of the pole above the ground was 25m.after it broke .the top of the pole touched the ground 15m from a base .how tall the part of the pole that was left standing

As when the tree will break it forms a right triangle whose hypotenuse is the part of the tree which have been broken and let that part will be y m

As x+y= 25m(the full height of tree)

So y=25-x

using pythagoras theorem

i.e

Hypotenuse^2=base^2+altitude^2

y^2=15^2+x^2

We have to find x so putting value of y

(25-x)^2=225+x^2

Opening square using (a-b)^2=a^2+b^2-2ab

625+x^2-50x=225+x^2

50x=400

x=8m
