Given :- You hire a car for Rs 2000, plus the cost of the petrol used. Let ‘x’ be the distance you travel in miles, and ‘p’ the price of petrol in paisa/gallons. If petrol consumption is 30 miles per gallon, write down expressions for the amount you spend on petrol, and average cost per mile traveled.

Solution :-

→ petrol consumption for 30 miles = 1 gallon

so,

→ petrol consumption for 30 mile = (1/30) gallon

then,

→ petrol consumption for x miles = (1/30) * x = (x/30) gallons .

now,

→ for 1 gallon price of petrol = p paisa

→ for (x/30) gallons price of petrol = (x/30) * p = (px/30) paisa = (px/30) * (1/100) = Rs.(px/3000) = Total amount spent on petrol .

now,

→ Total amount spent on travelling = hire cost of car + petrol cost = Rs.2000 + Rs.(px/3000) .

therefore,

→ Average cost per mile traveled = Total amount / Total distance = [2000 + (px/3000)] / x = [(6000000 + px)/3000x] = Rs.[(2000/x) + (p/3000)]
