A zeolite softener was 90% exhausted by removing hardness of 10,000 l of hard water sample. The exhausted zeolite bed required 200 l of 3% nacl solution for its complete regeneration. Calculate hardness.

The hardness of water is 0.5128 ppm

Explanation :

The Nacl concentration is 3%

=> 100 ltrs of the solution contains 3 grms of Nacl

=> 200 ltrs of solution contains 6 gms of Nacl

CaCO₃ equivalent of 6 gms of Nacl = 6 x 100/(2x58.5)

= 600/117

= 5.128 gms

= 5128 mg

1 ltrs of water ------> x ppm

=> 10000 ltrs of water = x * 10000 ppm = 5128mg

=> x =5128/10000= 0.5128 ppm

Hence, the hardness of water is 0.5128 ppm
