The organisms is a micro-organism, so it will mainly consume the substances which will be beneficial for him. By comparing, we may say that the nutrients (here considering as N for simplicity ) refers to:

  1. If the micro-organism is an yeast i.e. fungi then N= sugar like sucrose/ glucose. (this may applies to amoeba like organisms as well)
  2. If it is a plant ( like any algae or bryophytes which are micro in size) it may take in some of the essential elements like N= N, P, K, Ca, Na, Mg etc.
  3. If the micro-organism is a prokaryotic cell, mostly being a bacteria, it will collect the essential elements and, like N= cyanophycean starch, phosphate granules etc.
