The tiger (Panthera tigris) is one of the most magnificent and awe-inspiring wild
animal alive today. The tiger has nine subspecies, but three of these are already extinct
and the population of tigers all across Asia has now decreased significantly. The
Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) can be found in India, Nepal, Bangladesh and
Bhutan and the Indochinese tiger (Panthera tigris corbetti) is found in the forests and
mountains of Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, and Burma. The Malayan tiger
(Panthera tigris jacksoni) is found in West Malaysia, while the Siberian tiger
(Panthera tigris altaica) lives in Eastern Siberia in Russia. The South China tiger
(Panthera tigris amoyensis) is found in Southern China whereas the Sumatran tiger
(Panthera tigris sumatrae) is found on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. The Bali
tiger (Panthera tigris balica), the Caspian tiger (Panthera tigris virgata), and the Javan
tiger (Panthera tigris sondaica) are the extinct subspecies. The Bali and Javan tiger
were found on the islands of Bali and Java in Indonesia, while the Caspian tiger was
found in Central Asia
