'awful' in this sentence.

According to the dictionary 'Awful' means very bad, unpleasant, or of low quality etc. Awful also means very great or large. which is use in mostly a negative sense.
But in this sentence 'Awful lot' means the moongs that were produced in large numbers.
EXPLANATION:
- The writer wants to grow his moongs using chemicals and pesticides instead wanted his crops to be grown in fertile soil. Nutrients is essential for growing the plant in farm.
- In the form nutrients plants need nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium which can be run out from soil. For maintain the nutrients into the soil the writer adds fertilizers.
