(A3) (i) The writer says he grew ‘an awful lot of moong'. Explain the word
'awful' in this sentence.

According to the dictionary 'Awful' means very bad, unpleasant, or of low quality etc. Awful also means very great or large. which is use in mostly a negative sense.

But in this sentence 'Awful lot' means the moongs that were produced in large numbers.

EXPLANATION:

  • The writer wants to grow his moongs using chemicals and pesticides instead wanted his crops to be grown in fertile soil. Nutrients is essential for growing the plant in farm.
  • In the form nutrients plants need nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium which can be run out from soil. For maintain the nutrients into the soil the writer adds fertilizers.
  • Added Fertilized soil is helpful in growth of the plant which helps to increases the moongs of poet   on the farm. So, that's why the purity of the soil they got high yield of moong. This was why the writer told that he grew an awful lot of moong.
