• From either city, the journey to the Sahara requires at least a full day. The Sahara Desert may be explored during the day without having to spend the night in the desert, which is ideal if you're pressed for time or just don't like the thought of sleeping outside beneath the stars.
• The Sahara is the world's hottest desert and has one of the toughest climatic conditions. The warmest temperature ever recorded was 58°C, while the average yearly temperature is 30°C. In fact, less than an inch of rain falls on the region annually, covering only about half of the Sahara Desert.
• Spending time in the Sahara Desert is breathtakingly beautiful every day and night. With its massive sand dunes, wells, and dry oases, the landscape is both distinctive and timeless.
• The Sahara is at least 4.6 million years old, according to new study into what looks to be dust that the Sahara swept across to the Canary Islands. This is the first time that this age has been directly proven on dry land.
• Although it is hardly a pleasant excursion, it is possible to travel to the dry, sandy desert where the Eye of the Sahara calls home. A Mauritanian visa must first be obtained, and then a local sponsor must be found. Tourists are recommended to plan their local trip once they have been admitted.
